San Jose, CA -- Meredith “Mer” Curry Nuñez announced on September 15, 2025, that she was running for East Side Union High School District Trustee (ESUHSD) in 2026. Her team officially announced the campaign launch today (October 6), following the conclusion of the ESUHSD school board's redistricting process, which began earlier this year.
On October 3, with the approval of a new by-trustee area election system with five single-member trustee areas, Curry Nuñez confirmed that the district she will run for is trustee area 1, representing Alum Rock. The board also approved a two-year shortened term election in 2026 for this trustee area, and thereafter a four-year term in 2028.
Curry Nuñez, 43, has worked in nonprofit, education, and workforce development for over 20 years, including leading a regional coalition and a statewide nonprofit.
Curry Nuñez currently serves as an Advisory Council member for the California Medicine Scholars Program, the inaugural Board Secretary for LEAD Filipino, and the newest Co-Chair for the Black Leadership Kitchen Cabinet of Silicon Valley. She is the Owner and Principal Consultant of AdvancED Consulting, LLC. She will be concluding her service as the Executive Director of the Northern California College Promise Coalition in October 2025, after over five years of leading the regional coalition.
“I was lucky to grow up here with my cousins, who graduated from East Side schools just like I did. I am running because I can make a difference for my alma mater, just like I’ve made a difference across the Bay Area and California. I want to make the East Side a place where success is possible for every student and every family.”
Curry Nuñez attended and graduated from local schools like Piedmont Hills High School in ESUHSD, Piedmont Middle School, Noble Elementary School, and Toyon Elementary School (now closed).
“I’m running to stabilize district finances and strengthen trust in school governance, improve outcomes for all students, not just some, and I am committed to ensuring East Side students both graduate and can earn a living.”
The longest standing board member of ESUHSD is J. Manuel Herrera (since 1990), followed by Van T. Le (since 2010), Pattie Cortese (since 2015), Lorena Chavez (since 2018), and Bryan Do (since 2020).
"With her impactful work as the former executive director of the Northern California College Promise Coalition, I know that Meredith Curry Nuñez will center the needs of students and ensure they have access to a quality education and the resources they need to thrive,” said Dr. Michael Chang, Former President of the Santa Clara County Board of Education.
